True Confession

Some men by feigned words, as dark as mine, make truth to spangle, and its rays to shine. Were not God’s laws, his Gospel laws, in olden times held forth by types, shadows, and metaphors? Yet loth will any sober man be to find fault with them, lest he be found for to assault the highest wisdom!

John Bunyan
The Pilgrim’s Progress (1678)

You were hoping I would see what you believe in See it clear enough to weigh it in my mind It was clear enough to you that I was leaving On a search to find a more familiar sign
While I knew there was a way that you could ease my mind No matter how you tried I was only mystified
It was a very true confession
But I tore it all apart
A very real expression
You were only trying to say it from your heart
I wasn’t raised with much attention
For the race that finds you always in your stride
So I told you that I needed some assurance
And you said that you were really on my side
But you didn’t use the old familiar numbers
How could I misread your intent when your faith was Heaven sent?
