“As in all sweetest music, a tinge of sadness was in every note. Nor do we know how much of the pleasures even of life we owe to the intermingled sorrows.”
George MacDonald
Each of the songs on this album derive from the prose works of various authors; Diamond’s Lullaby from George MacDonald’s tale for children At the Back of the North Wind (1871), When He Comes from the first of C.S. Lewis’s Narnia chronicles The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe (1950). When At Night is an evening hymn from act two of Hansel and Gretel, an opera written in 1893 by the German composer Engelbert Humperdinck. The opera is based on the work of Humperdinck’s fellow countrymen Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, who included in their Kinder- und Hausmärchen, or Household and Nursery Tales, the ancient story of Hansel and Gretel. My Empty Pockets is based on the essay The Creative Christian by David Edwards. The music to When Morning Comes was written by Jeffrey David Hooven, the twentieth century composer and conductor. The lyrics to that song, The Son and the Angels, I Saw Your Prayer and Grandfather’s House are based respectively on chapters two, four, six and seven of the book by David Edwards titled Dreams, Tales and Lullabies: Stories From My Grandfather’s House. The book [was] published by Lexicon Music, who also issued a songbook containing lyrics and lead sheets to all eight songs along with program notes that include synopses for each related story.
“There is a childhood into which we have to grow, just as there is a childhood which we must leave behind; a childlikeness which is the highest gain of humanity, and a childishness from which but few of those who are counted the wisest among men, have freed themselves in their imagined progress towards the reality of things.”
George MacDonald
