  • This Friend of Old

There you go, on the way to meet your fortune and your dreams
On a road that is often not the highway that it seems
Well, I’ve been down that road and back again
I had the grandest dreams on the way
And if you find, somehow, when the hours have run
That your hour to shine has come and gone
Then you’ll know what friends are for
’Cause you know I always keep an open door
This friend of old will one day be your friend once more
You are strong with a youthful power that will not always be
So move along, reach as high above the stars as you can see
But if those stars don’t shine on your castles there
And if your grandest dreams start to fade
And if you find, somehow, when the hours have run
That your hour to shine has come and gone
Then you’ll know what friends are for
’Cause you know I always keep an open door
This friend of old will one day be your friend once more
But if those stars don’t shine on your castles there
And if your grandest dreams start to fade
And if you find, somehow, when the hours have run
That your hour to shine has come and gone
Then you’ll know what friends are for
’Cause you know I always keep an open door
This friend of old will one day be your friend once more
This friend of old will one day be your friend once more.

  • Hope Lies Still

I’ve dreamed all a man can dream
Believed all a man can believe
    And I’ve seen those dreams
Go tumbling like stones in a raging river.
Some kind of flood has washed them to the sea
Faith and hope have all but left me
Maybe somewhere in that ocean of doubt
    They are still remembered.
I’ve spoken like a man who knew the truth
When all I knew was what I fancied
But I told the only truth I knew
And gave the only heart was left me.
I guess I loved the best I could
Or so I thought I knew the ways of love
But what I knew was surely something less
’Cause now it’s just a memory.
And now I see through vain remorse
How my yesterdays have run their course
To the children of their children
    They will not defend me.
There’s something in the wind, I can’t deny
It may be the angels Heaven sent me
But I cannot see them in the sky
Can’t feel them bending down to set me free.
Somewhere at the heart of me
    Somewhere in the distance
Hope lies still, like a summer flower
    Beneath the rains of autumn.
Who knows what the winter brings?
    Maybe death, and maybe spring
    Maybe dreams of other dreams
    I have long forgotten.

  • Befriended

When the morning shines before you
And your hope is on the rise
As the breath of spring inspires you
    From her windy April skies
When the sunny hours and minutes seem to say
    They will never go away
Then you know you are befriended.
When clouds have hidden the sun away
In a bleak and ghostly shroud
And the naked trees stand shivering gray
    Their garments strewn about
When the frosty air creeps, damp, into your bones
And through the birds’ abandoned homes
Still you know you are befriended
    You are befriended.
    And in your darkest night
When you’re feeling like a stranger
In a world that’s not your own
God has put these friends around you
So when the tempest swirls around you
    You will never be alone
    Never be alone.
When your heart is full of music
And you need someone to hear
That you’re deep within the throes of love
Or the icy grip of fear
    When your day is bright
    All sorrow in the past
Or when you long to flee at last
Still you know you are befriended
    You are befriended.

  • By the Way of the Sea

In the gloom of the night In a land where they have no dawn Where hatred and rage They churn like a boiling sea
They will see a great light
They who walk where the hand of death is strong
In the heart of Zebulun the land of Galilee
Never a light so brightly shone
Oh! But your heart is like a stone!
    Who will release you Ephraim?
Who will ever set you free?
Look for a son, your deliverance comes
By the way of the sea.
    Cowering in fear
Oppressed by a hand they cannot see
    Your warriors and kings
They cry for their plundered souls.
    And heaven will hear:
A lowly child will set them free
    The Prince of Peace
    His timeless truth unfolds.
Never a love could be so strong,
Oh! Didn’t you know it all along?
    Who will release you Ephraim?
Who will ever set you free?
Look for a son, your deliverance comes
By the way of the sea
But oh! Will you know your Emanuel?
Or will the nation of Israel only stumble and fall?
And how will it go in Jerusalem?
Will your prophets and holy men find their king after all?
    Heaven has seen:
Your kings have been driven from their thrones
    Your hopes have been crushed
By the weight of your ancient dream
Stretching His hand across the skies
Sweeping the refuge of our lies
    He will release you, Ephraim
He will surely set you free:
Look for a son, your deliverance comes
By the way of the sea
